The First Generation
The Chevrolet Corvette has evolved through as many as six generations namely C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6. The first generation period started from 1953 and ends in the year 1962. The first generation Corvette cars were generally known as "solid axle" cars. This is because the independent rear suspensions were not available at the time. Independent rear suspensions were incorporated in the cars only in 1963. Independent rear suspensions were also known as IRS.
The difficulties faced by designers and engineers during the year 1953 are absolutely worthy to mention. The difficulty in producing the car was huge because this model was new to them and they could not afford to have any sorts of mistakes since it would put an end to the long run of this sports car. Hence, they had to take each and every step very cautiously and carefully and the full credit of doing it successfully goes them. Apart from that, it should be specially noted that all the car parts had to be assembled manually as automated machinery was not there. As a result of this, the Corvette car production was slow in the year 1953. General Motors could only produce 300 units because of these difficulties. This resulted in a special mentioning in the pages of Corvette car history that 1953 was the year in which, the least number of Corvette cars were manufactured.
The year 1954 witnessed some other dramatic changes in the production of the Chevrolet Corvette since as many as six cylindrical engines were used in the car to get maximum efficiency. Some different variants in color patterns had also been released which was a great success at that time. As years passed, latest technologies were adapted by Corvette experts. This quick adaptation is the critical catalyst in the Chevrolet Corvette car success story. The year 1955 was no different story to tell with respect to changes as the only constant related to Corvette was the term "change". In 1955, the blue flame engine got replaced by a more powerful one from the V-8 series. This was a critical step taken by Corvette experts. Another noticeable aspect of the 1955 model Corvette was the slight change in appearance, as the letter "v" in the word Corvette was made bigger in size when compared to other letters. Apart from that, the letter "v" was colored gold and this was to imply the kind of engine that the new Corvette was using.

Chevrolet Corvette welcomed the year 1956 with new style and design as the body of the car was changed. It was then that the car got a sporty look. The facility of "optional fuel injection" was incorporated in the 1957 year model of Corvette and more revolutions were yet to come in the year 1958. The body, style and appearance had a dramatic change which looked absolutely awesome. Finally, the last year of first generation, 1962, witnessed a whole lot of changes in the wind shield, in the convertible design and by this time, Corvette had an undisputed position in the industry.
